The assertion that olive polyphenols protect blood lipids from oxidative damage (a key factor in many diseases) was among a limited number of food health claims the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) accepted in 2012 after reviewing more than 2,700 such claims.

According to the European Commission Regulation (EU) 432/2012, approved by the European Food Safety Authority EFSA, olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress. The claim may be used only for olive oils, containing at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20 g of olive oil (250 ppm).

It is something our Greek forefathers knew instinctively, of course. The Mediterranean diet has long been considered an elixir of life in our part of the world. And extra virgin olive oil has long been a staple of our Greek cuisine.
